New Standard of the Home Electronics,
2012/05, with Homebuilder company
gaux examine whole experiences of consumer electronics.
For the flood of appliances and the inconsistent system,
we created advanced standard for the appliances.
In the beginning of this project, our focus started from questioning why the controllers of home electronics are, in a sense, inconsistent? Soon after; however, our inquiry moved to the next lower layer.
The another question is following; is the form of consumer electronics the most suitable for our modern life?
In the past when the ancestor of home electronics was invented, it must respond its intention or demand of that time. In these days, on the other hands, the motion and function of our gadgets are decided in advance.
What we want is not fingering button to adjust the direction of the wind and to set indicator 25°C, but simply warm the room.
Reflecting on the history of each product, you will find a simple engine which accelerates the evolution of products by responding the humans demands as directly as possible is underlying modern culture.
(Someone would express their regret, but) there is a movement which moves to the future in which products vanish physically in corresponding to the demands.
Then, we reached a conclusion to put forward idea of UI which manipulates phenomenon super-directly and exemplary model of an age of transition and today for the coming future.
One problem can be a clue to reach deeply rooted problems depending on the approach.
IIf we look at the history of products, human being has been improving commodity by minimizing – even to nearly zero – the mass of products, and to reduce the process between action and what the user wants to do. We named this program ‘Process-less’.
iPhone which keep assembling many functions that various products used to play and getting thinner is one of the conceiving case, but we took flint and IH(Induction Heating) that is closer to home electronics as the example. It sounds tautological, but what human desire is not handling fire, but just want to heat what they want. That means, the approach keeps changing and being minimized even the purpose is consistent throughout the history.
Whereas, we envisaged the future UX beyond this engine is heading for. We predict that this movement veers direction in which people will enjoy controlling phenomenon directly – we name this impending reality, Super Directly.
Consequently, establishing an UI which will pursue until Super Directly became a core theme in this project.
(Perhaps, someone would balance their own body temperature instead of adjusting room temperature –, but there will be a specific number of people who enjoy using silex equally.
This forecast is about alternative possibility, and where are we standing now is another story though…)
Our research went from listing up manipulation system of home appliances in the market and conducting abduction. Then we realized that what problematic is not the fact that each controller have different design rule, but that each home electronics have inconsistent operating models.
Throughout these researches, the concept, Process-less and Super Directly got exteriorized gradually. In the process of designing, in order to keep balance between this futuristic idea and a realistic image, designers circulate in two opposite realms.
Based on distinct concept, we moved to the next step.
As we designed the information architecture, we sorted appliances by a phenomenon instead of the name. As far as devices which have multi features, we put them in the same format to make it simple.
Not being a fanciful futuristic design is important. Speculative approach sometimes ends up with unrealistic expectations. Seeking solution for both the future society, as well as tomorrow is imperative mission.
Controlling air volume and flow by the single system.
It appears when the user needs, and they can adjust intuitively by touching the display.
The basic information such as total cooking time or cooking temperature are indicated animation effects and color gradation.
The user can enjoy cooking more sensuously.
All necessary information such as water volume, temperature, and time are visually informed. We made the user experience as if they are touching this information directly.
You do not need to go to the bathroom to set up warmth, amount of water. Graphical information tells you the appropriate volume.
You can adjust lightness itself. It feels like touching a mass of the photon. Also, the direction and volume of light are controllable on their own terms.
This UI evokes users an experience as if they regulate the tangible air.
We think visual expression is an appropriate medium to realize both futuristic idea and realistic and comfortable reality which evokes a tangible vision. Depicting future perception and presenting its pathway are two things.”
